Philly United by Wissahickon Brewing Co. succeeds where a lot of other light beers fail. It’s smooth and refreshing, but still full of flavor. Most light beers are just a step above water in the taste department. That’s not the case with Philly United. This beer gives me serious IPA vibes without the high ABV.

Wissahickon Brewing Company, located in East Falls, Philadelphia, has a full spectrum of quality beer on tap. At 5% ABV, Philly United is one of the brewery’s lighter offerings. Let’s take a look under the hood.

Philly United is bright amber in color, but darker than comparable light beers. As previously mentioned, this American lager has the bold flavor of an IPA. However, unlike a lot of IPAs, Philly United isn’t too hoppy. With an aftertaste that doesn’t overstay its welcome, this beer goes down fast. It’s perfect for tailgating or other day-long social engagements. You can drink this beer in volume without making a fool of yourself or feeling like shit the next day.

The label design of Philly United is just as crisp as its taste. With the words ‘Philly United’ written in bold golden letters, this beer really stands out on a crowded shelf of local brews. To top things off, a silhouette of City Hall and the Philadelphia skyline frames the bottom of the can. Top-notch beer with top-notch marketing at the affordable price of $13 for a 4-pack of 16oz cans.

Despite all that I’ve written so far, the best thing about Philly United is the fact that proceeds go towards emergency support for Philadelphia cancer patients & their families through Legacy of Hope. I get a great light beer while helping those in need? Sign me up any day of the week!

Overall, I give Philly United 4 out of 5 stars. It’s slightly stronger and has more taste than most light beers I’ve tried including Philly Standard by Yards. It’s easy to drink and, most importantly, easy on the stomach. I look forward to trying more beer offerings from Wissahickon Brewing Co., but next time in person.
